Round bales, such as you witnessed, are easier to transport and handle than the smaller square bales that you traditionally would associate with hay- although sometimes the small square bales are still produced. Depending upon what animal the hay is for (horses have more delicate digestive systems than cows and so thier hay must not be exposed to weather/rain after baling) it may be wrapped in the white plastic or stored in barns to preserve it.<br /><br />Hope that is informative.
