News & Views, This & That

French Elle asks the question: What do we think of tie-dyed lips? What do you think of them?
Françoise Hardy
For a decade or more the shy, reclusive Françoise Hardy has not produced a new album. Now she has and the media are abuzz with interviews all asking her about the self-composed melancholy lyrics that are beautiful and poignant. She has apparently had quite a difficult/complicated time with love. She is, however, delightful and self-afacing in interviews.

Don't you just love her pure white hair and the perfect cut to make it sultry and young?
The last week in November and the first week or so in December all of the magazines are filled with bijoux advertisements for Noël as you know. Never mind the jewels, in a pretty spread with a model wearing several rings on all of her fingers, her fingernails were painted with Chanel "Beige" which I've decided I like. It looks more opaque pink rather than beige, but works beautifully as a no competition backdrop for however many rings one might decide to wear.

Yesterday while shopping at the grocery store -- not the market, that will be tomorrow -- there was a young woman in her 20s in front of me. One of my favorite pass times while waiting in such lines is to observe what the people in front of me, and the one behind, are buying. (It helps me remain zen particularly when I'm in a rush.)

This is what the obviously health-conscious woman bought: lentils, yellow raisins, two types of apples, Roquefort, a bottle of Muscadet, endives, walnuts (in the shell), a box of multi-colored cherry tomatoes and a bar of milk chocolate with hazel nuts. Yes, not the dark chocolate we're constantly told we should eat.

No to the lips, yes to Francoise Hardy, yes to the nails, and yes to the healthy eating. Now I want to make some lentil soup...

The lips look cool in the picture, but I just do not think would work for real life!! I am so happy to find someone else who spies on shopping baskets while waiting in line...one of my favorite time killing past times!

Love Francoise Hardy's music, so happy to learn she has something new out. Can't give up my lipgloss, no matter what else is cool.

Yes for the lips, one can do it in so many ways.
I´m really not interested in what others buy at the groceries or anywhere else, though the woman you wrote about, had everything I too like.

I'm off to a manicure appointment in an hour. That colour looks perfect!
Like you, I love to sneak a peek at what others purchase in grocery stores. Sunday night is the best time to do this. Lots of young single people with strangely unique choices.
As to the lips... they look a bit of a mistake to me.

She is truly stunning and I love her hair colour!
I just wish mine was that shade, I could give up having it dyed.

Re the shopping basket. I am always dying to tell the person ahead of me that she is wasting her money buying individual servings of applesauce and pudding and that she can make her own yogurt for a lot less money than buying it and that it takes almost no effort. None! And if I see her buying Lunchables, I want to tell her that she is paying way too much for convenience. How hard is it to put some sandwich meat between two slices of bread and throw it in a baggie?

Good grief! I can't even be bothered to take part in this whole nail art trend--now I'm supposed to be tie-dying my lipstick?

But yay for the young woman with the milk chocolate/hazelnut bar ... when it comes to hazelnuts, milk chocolate leave dark chocolate sitting in the road. Also, it probably has more calcium than dark, so there's that.

I don't think I will be showing what's in my trolley...:) xv

Some women can pull off that white hair and look divine. The rest of us? Not so much...

As for that grocery cart, I'd take every bite except the Rochefort. And I would indeed prefer the dark chocolate, myself.

I'm certain it's what keeps my flowing locks their "natural" color.

Bisous...

I don't know Mme. Hardy but lover her look. Is that silver eye shadow? Whatever it is she looks great. As for tie-dye lips - what will they think of next.

Francois Hardy was the first french CD I bought my first trip to France. She has a beautiful voice, although I hadn't realised the CD was from twenty years before my purchase (1995). She does look fabulous with her striking hair color and black leather coat. Maybe that will be in my future, too. I have a few more pounds to lose before I go grey/or white and cut off my hair!

Tie dye lips? Kind of silly, IMO, plus too much trouble. Francoise Hardy looks great, not sure how old she is, but her hair is beautiful and doesn't make her look "matronly".

I always check out other people's grocery carts, and admit I tend to be judgemental, especially if they are overweight people buying lots of junk food! I eat dark chocolate rather than milk, but only because I loved it long before I knew it was actually good for me. That's a rare thing, that I prefer the healthy option!

I've decided I need sprucing up, so earlier this week I did buy a ton of beauty products...foundation, lipstick, eye shadow, lip pencil, mascara, nail polish. It's been too long since I've refreshed my supplies but, ouch, it was staggeringly-expensive yet it made me feel in good position for the new year. I had to squelch the desire to buy the different colors of rainbow nail paint...blue, yellow, orange, green, purple; when I was a teen, the most daring to pull off was a white, including white lipstick (horrors). I'm sure they matched white go-go boots (more horrors). Anyway, I wound up with a shade of nail polish similar to yours and it's not really so boring. And I want to pull off the white hair, I really do, but...not yet, Tish!

Interesting that you mentioned a young woman's shopping list at the food market...I was SO health-conscious in my 20s (it waned later on...) and I, too, would carefully select what to put in my mouth, steamed veggies being the rage at the time. Today, I tend to go to the market only occasionally (fortunately I have a husband who prefers to do the food shopping) but, last time, I saw a girl of a similar age to the one you saw...and her purchases were brie, baguettes, dried fruit, chutney, apples, celery, mixed unsalted nuts and white wine, placed no less in a reusable canvas shopping tote. I noticed this so closely because my mind began to work on the occasion...a picnic? I had to resist the temptation to pat her on the shoulder, expressing my appreciation for her good conscience and mindful eating. She looked like she hadn't eaten a potato chip in her life.

Ooh, I am so glad I am not the only one who loves looking in other peoples carts--I can't stop myself, I am fascinated! My French honey always busts me on it when he catches me though, oops. And wow would I like to eat at her house. A nice endive salad with roquefort, raisins (probably some nuts too) and a glass of Muscadet? Yes please!

Bon weekend Tish!

Francoise Hardy is gorgeous - and yes to the tie-dye lips though I don't think I'm technically able to recreate the look!
