Ed. Note: Let's face it, one can no longer avoid the inevitable. If you haven't already started to seriously think about dressing for autumn, in my opinion the best season of all, here the brilliant, and adorable, Janice, of The Vivienne Files, suggests we might consider green and brown. To be perfectly honest, I have never considered green in any way or in any form, but that's just me. Love the browns and can imagine them with grays and camels for example. Probably many of you like green. If you have the time, you might tell me why. Merci chere Janice -- encore. ![]() |

Janice is a genius. I love this combination and need something green (and not the usual varying shades of khaki) in my life.
I must agree with the reader above, you are an absolutely chic genius! Love the picks and while I have never put the two colours together, I think you have inspired me to rethink the combination!
I read Janice's blog all the time, (and yours) I am copying this in my colours of navy and coordinating colours as I am off for a business casual weekend conference to Ottawa. Perfect outfits for that!
I love this shade of green and the Dorothy Perkins flats! Stunning pieces together.
While I'd never have considered marrying or pairing these two colours Janice just makes it work and it all looks so effortless....I think she needs to write a book on dressing. I'd buy it!
I love greens most simply because they look good on me. But I have trouble actually finding greens that are not too bright or too yellow. This may be a good season for green lovers.
Green is my favorite color and I wear this combination a lot. As I've gotten older I find that black makes me look haggard, and brown is softer and way more flattering with my coloring. So thanks for posting my favorite color combination, with all of your lovely ideas for freshening it up...
I like the shade and shape of the mint green cardigan.
Hi Tish,
I am not a great fan of green generally speaking but mint green is special. It's a pastel shade and it goes with many other colors (dark or light ones). This combination of brown and mint green is lovely. It's a wonderful way to zest up traditional fall and winter colors. Actually brown goes with so many colors. I love to pair it with pastel blue too (soft touch)or tangerine ("bold" touch).
Thank you and thank you Janice for all these great suggestions.
xo,
Anne
This is not a duo I would normally choose; however the ensembles paired with cream and winter white bring it to life for me.

I love green! In various shades. Maybe because I have green eyes, so I think it looks good on me. My very favorite color is aqua/turquoise/seafoam, but I also like Kelly green and hunter green. Oh, and pale green, I guess that is called celery or maybe spring green. Not that crazy about avocado green as a color, though delicious to eat!
Oh how that green bag in the first picture and the brown dress with the graphic a the hem thrill me!
A great post, yet again! I love green too and one of my favourite outfits is my brown trouser suit with green tops. I always chose green as I thought I had hazel eyes until a colour analyst mentioned my blue eyes. Blue? No way! They are hazel with green bits! She was right, but when I wear green my eyes DO look green so I'm happy!
I agree with Lilith - I am so off black and so now using other base colours as I let my hair grey (brown, burgundy)
Green is lovely - well, these greens are. Fresh, natural backdrop like leaves for flowers, green with brown is grounded but still a pop of colour that is cheery.
I don't much like the "fake" emerald green colour that is around at the moment, rather the apple/leaf greens.
Love the flats - just saw some very posh ones in a boutique window. But why are so many shoes this autumn in suede that will be ruined at the first raindrop?!
When I lived in Chicago, I loved emerald/forest green; when I lived in San Francisco, I loved mint green. Climate really does make a difference!
Now I'm north of the 45th parallel, so it's forest green again.
And yes, Janice is a complete and absolute genius!
I always hoped Janice would do a redhead-friendly palette. Some of us were born to wear green (auburn, fair complection, green eyes). And nothing is quite so deadly for my coloring as grey or burgundy.
This particular shade of green is gorgeous but maybe not as flattering as hunter, loden, and deep, deep emerald.
