A French Country Weekend

This week my wish was made on my first seasonal encounter with cantaloupes. As I've said, it's always the same wish and if it comes true I'll tell you what it was. It's an incredibly important wish and it's not for me so if you would like to cross your fingers -- just once -- that would be wonderful.

I always ask my market man to choose my cantaloupes. He asks, "When will you be eating them?" I tell him, "One tonight and the other three days later." He then takes out his felt-tip pen and puts an X on the one to eat first.

He also chooses my artichokes. We love artichokes and I've found they are the magic vegetable -- almost no calories (assuming one goes light or avoids altogether accompanying sauces) and extremely filling. He tells me the petals must be closed. If they're too open, the artichoke is generally not as fresh.

I'm telling you, one learns things in this country.

Weather report: warm, not hot, bright sun, slight breeze, in a word, splendid.

A demain my trés, trés, chers amis.

I love artichokes and always buy the tightest ones I can find. Much fresher and tastier. But like you, I have the produce man pick out melons - have never perfected that art. I'm hoping your wish comes true soon. I have a feeling we both have the same wish, for different people though of course. xo

I had never heard of the idea of making a wish on the first fruit of the season. I like this and I do hope your wish comes true.
How I wish we had a market nearby that the produce 'specialist' could advise me. Great tips from Kathy on the artichokes as well.

Both sound delicious right now! I love it when someone knowledgable helps me out at the vegetable or fruit stand! I think I will get both of those today as well!

I can't say I've ever purchased an artichoke, though I enjoy eating them. (Now I know how to choose one. Thank you for that!)

Bon weekend!

The food sounds wonderful, but what I would really like to have is a produce man!

We don't have a "produce man" but sometimes the produce guys in the grocery stores can help. (Sometimes not.) I cook artichokes regularly when they're in season. Leaves closed, yes, but also the bud should have some "give" when you squeeze it. Too hard and you'll wind up with a tough 'choke. I'm enjoying some cantaloupe (with berries and yogurt) right now! Got lucky with this one; it's sweet and flavorful.

I love buying fresh produce from the farmer's markets.
The local one I frequent have recipes available and the farmer often cooks up some patty pans squashes and gives out samples...

I'm enjoying watermelon cubes for breakfast this morning.

I think we are all jealous of your Market Man. I do almost all my shopping at the grocery store, because that's my only option. I would not bother to ask anyone's advice, I doubt they know much more than I do. Less, maybe. Perhaps someday I will live in a place with a Market Man!

I would LOVE for someone to choose cantaloupes for me. It's one of the most difficult things to get just right.
