10 Accessory Essentials From An Expert

Earrings: Splenderosa, Gems on Glamour

Today, my great, great friend, Marsha, creator of the sumptuous blog and now -- too, too exciting (!) -- her new website  which will give pride of place to her divine jewelry collection, kindly agreed to tell us her 10 accessory essentials.

The earrings above are a teaser for you. She didn't put them up there. I did; she is too modest. I want them.

1. Black Pashmina

The luxurious cashmere, very wide, very long versions.

This piece can be tied around your neck during winter, wrapped around your coat for an extra layer of warmth when the wind chill is terrible, can be draped over your shoulder like the photo creating an air of drama to even the most simple of outfits, and takes care of the chill when dining out.

2.  Large Black Handbag

Gucci

The best quality you can afford because if it's really good it will last forever, make it easy to carry over your shoulder, make it large enough to put your small black handbag inside, all your travel documents, makeup, Rx's, and even your poodle.

You can go around the world with this handbag, it should dress up or down well.

3. Small Black Handbag

A sleek, refined & elegant bag, one which will take you to a dinner party, a cocktail party, to church, to a wedding, to a funeral.

4. Black High-Heeled Pump

Manolo Blahnik

A shoe to wear to dress up any outfit even a pair of great black slacks & a white shirt,
pop on the pashmina & the small bag, voila you're done.

5. Black Ballerina Flats

Anniel ballerines

6.  Black Sandals

Dahlia sandals.

Wear with everything except a ball gown, even a casual long skirt, jeans, capris, Bermudas,

7. Black Tights

8. Long Narrow White Scarf

Same reasons as the pashmina, except this one can be tied around your head if you're having a bad hair day, thrown around your neck and dangling down the fronts of your blazer,
tied around a la Isadora Dunca it adds elegance
.

9. A Jacket

Vanessa Bruno

A leather one, bright pink or bright red, or even black in an unexpected shape close to the body, this one is by Kelly Wearstler, a tie-died leather, as the the entire ensemble which I love.

10. JEWELRY

Gold Hoops/Silver Hoops

Diamond Studs

Rope Necklaces, long pieces which can be doubled tripled or used as belts.
imagine how the outfit above would look with ropes of black crystal beads,
or a big chunky tribal piece?

These two stunning cuffs are from Marsha's collection. She didn't put them in this post. I did. And. I plan on ordering them.
The look of an outfit can be changed immediately with jewelry. I don't wear a watch when traveling, my phone tells me the time.

SUMMARY

Over the years I've learned to totally lighten up on the apparel when traveling.
there's usually no one to help you with luggage and it's now expensive to check.
I use black and white with a pop of ONE color throughout the trip's various agendas.

Bring a whimsical pair of shoes which are really comfortable, add a scarf, or a colorful handbag.

Concentrate on how YOU look -- your hair, nails, toes, skin. If all this is beautiful and you wear black or white you will always appear perfectly attired and elegant.

If you are in your early 20's you don't need to read or listen to any of this
as I'm sure you'll have jeans & a great tee with one jacket.

Thank you to Tish for allowing me to pontificate on my strict fashion rules.

Splenderosa!!

Ed. Note: No, no, no, thank you my dearest Marsha.
Please everyone do click above. I promise you will want one (or more) of her designs. I plan on ordering several items. I'll tell you about them in another post.

THIS I love: "If you are in your early 20's you don't need to read or listen to any of this as I'm sure you'll have jeans & a great tee with one jacket."

I'm well into my 60's now and still like a pair of classy jeans, great tee & black jacket to fall back on. Is that bad?

How wonderful your posts lately are so timely .. am starting to set aside my choices for an upcoming very special trip to London and Paris and on looking at my choices - pretty much all black and white. I am taking almost no accessories or jewellery because I know I will find beautiful scarves and necklaces on my travels and therefore have souvenirs I can enjoy wearing.
Trying dress rehearsals though for my most comfortable jeans - comfort is key!

I'm slightly over 40, and I don't think that black is good for middle-aged skin. I'm pretty sure that lighter shades are more suitable for crow feet etc., most women at 40's are not dramatic enough for that much black.

Great advice, and really any good neutral can be substituted for black if of good quality materials. I adore those earrings at the top, am off to shop now!

I already have these in my wardrobe, and, no, I'm not twenty.
Excellent advise. The jewellery is divine. Happy Easter!

I have these things except ballerines (no arches!) and the white scarf. As for jeans over 60, yes, it can be done, but it's not as refined as beautifully-cut pants.

A wonderful list of essentials -- thank you, Marsha -- and every bit as helpful for those whom black doesn't suit, because I think deja pseu is right about substituting neutrals. One could do the whole thing again in navy or charcoal, and cream rather than bright white. I'd stick with black, except I'd be tempted to have the cashmere scarf in navy just because it would be better near my face. And navy and black is a good mix...

I love this list...
I think a white scarf is in my future and looking around at her website's lovely gems is a luxe experience.

Your recent series of guest posts - this and Vivienne's - have been most helpful ... and encouraging. I am thinning out my closet and getting back to basics (black and white, that is!) and realizing that so much of the clothing I have bought in the last 10 years has been wrong for me - which might explain why most of it is not worn. Better choices and more options for the future. THanks.

Thank you, Tish, for the opportunity to interact with some of your readers. I'm going to accessorize a kinda casual black/white outfit tomorrow, jewelry, shoes, bags, etc.
As yes, I don't even know what I'm doing. Agree, one can definitely substitute another neutral for black or white, it's really a personal choice...just make sure everything works together so you can use all the same accessories.
I so enjoyed reading these comments.

I have almost all these items, except the leather jacket & white scarf....in fact, just today I bought a very stylish black leather reptile-embossed clutch at Banana Republic. I didn't know I needed it until last Friday, when I went to a wine dinner which called for cocktail attire: I don't normally "do" cocktail attire, except at the holidays, but managed to dig up a black pencil skirt, which I paired with a sequined coral tank and a fitted black cardi. But I didn't have a suitable bag, since my usual black holiday bag is suede, & that didn't feel right. So now I'm ready for the next such occasion!

Unlike many commenters on this & other "certain age" fashion blogs, I love color and wear it often...but these black pieces (or navy, or charcoal) are essential to pair with the colors, or just for a goodnbasic outfit brightened up with a colorful scarf or jewelry. Good choices!

Meant to say, "good, basic outfit" . Can't type well on this iPad keyboard!

Marsha, l absolutely agree with your choices.. The only thing l'm missing is the jacket, oh, and the perfect pair of black pants that now seem elusive due to a change in body shape !

l just love your jewelery and have been waiting patiently for your website to launch..

You have to love Marsha. She has such great taste and style, and she designs beautiful jewelry. I agree with every one of her travel principles, but I would add the jeans and a tee or two.
Best...Victoria

I concur with Marsha's choice, but I also include appropriate attire for walking long distances and riding a bike and I just can't leave my jeans a a T-shirt or 2 behind!
