An Easy Target

Don't touch it!  Don't go near it!

That's what I am, an easy target for weight loss, detox, after holiday cut back, new year possibilities. You'll note I avoided the use of the dreaded word/concept "resolutions." I'm cutting them out of my repertoire this year, or, more accurately, I'm not broadcasting my resolutions. In that way I'll be the only one aware of the fact I fall outside the success statistics.

Probably, I should have shared my latest information in that realm on January 2nd, but I'm still working on my "No More Procrastination" resolution from previous Januarys. But I figure this falls succinctly within the better late than never category.

OK then. On the TV news the other night a nutritionist said that we shouldn't panic when we step on the scale after holiday indulgences. He claimed -- and I'm sure you, like moi meme hope he's right -- that those two to three pounds are not "real weight," but rather simple old water weight from overly salted holiday fare.

To lose the weight, which isn't really, he said drink tons of water (I forgot to write down how much, but it was a lot, much more than our eight glasses a day), don't go near the salt shaker and avoid sparkly water because it adds "bloat" which makes us feel yucky and look poochy.

(I just thought I would try out those words in the new year. I don't think I've ever written them before.)

No, no, no and no. You'll be sorry. . .
He said we should stick to the no salt, flat water regime for three to four days and the weight will disappear -- naturally. . .

A great friend of mine, a magazine editor, told me the best selling issues, bolstered by massive e-mail feedback, always have features about flat stomachs. Bubbly water distends the stomach. And, of course, I love it so. Lots of bubbly waters also have high salt content. Sometimes you just can't win.

I'd read that about bubbly water too a while back, but looking at the label of a San Pellegrino, I see 10 mg of sodium per serving, which is negligible. Raw celery (4 oz) has 136 mg. I guess if you were to drink 10 glasses a day of bubbly water it would add up.

At any rate, feeling a bit bloated myself, so will be mindful of the salt. (And a lot of "diet" and low-fat foods are also high in sodium, so read those labels...)

Tish, So I am leaving any extra salt out of the diet and luckily like non-bubbly water. I think it may take a bit more to get this winter weight off though.

I have taken to a handful of almonds to curb my appetite before dinner!

Oh, ooooo! The one indulgence I didn't feel guilty about was my sparkly mineral water :-(

Now, it'll be part of my guilty pleasures: Coffee with cream and sugar, wine, mineral water. . .

Not quite sure if I should thank you -- I'll let you know in 3-4 days ;-)

I know this. I'm starting to feel like there's a conspiracy out there, everything good is bad. But, like Pseu wrote, some bubbly waters have way less sodium then others, read the labels where you are, but I buy Pellegrino for the lower sodium content.
And, they do have the advantage of making you feel "fuller" while trying to shed some pounds.
I do try to drink two liters of flat water a day, for diet, skin, overall health. And of course, the extra exercise I get from constantly walking down the hall to the bathroom.

Also, am planning to make some decaf green tea to keep iced in a glass pitcher in the refrigerator. Green tea (as you know, until we hear otherwise) has a lot of great properties, and it's a good way to get all the water you need. Supposedly, helps boost your metabolism too, even the decaf??

All salt adds yup throughout the day. Most canned goods and soups for instance contain a lot. I am rather sodium conscious and make as many home made soups and such as I can. No salt added, or at least the minimum while cooking. It is best to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Salt is one of the major problems.

I love Perrier....
and now my bubble(s) have been burst.
Well I suppose it's lemon and still water from now on.

Thanks for that tip Tish,
bloat is not my favourite profile.

Tish- Thanks for the reminder. Also, refined sugar in any form can also cause water retention. Any kind of refined carbs.

Happy New Year!

I will just sit here and feel smug. Months ago I took Tish's advice about Dr Dukan: and what a good piece of advice it was.

The one great thing about cooking myself is the ability to remove salt, sugar and fat from my diet as much as possible. I also hate mineral water. These days I'm loving water with a lemon twist and lots of chamomile tea.

I can't drink bubbly water it makes me burp. And I never add salt - it's just the red wine that's my downfall!

I don't know what you won, but I do know that you are a winner. :) Speaking of, I nearly fell over when I saw the price of the Detox tea in the shop today. I am going to have to just suck it up and buy it because I need it!

Ok, will be a bit slightly devil's advocate in saying that from my acting days, right before a shoot the thing that I could never eat was raw veggies as nothing gives you bloat as much as that! But that is just me, desperately trying to justify my love affair with San P...

Oh no! I order Pellegrino by the case (glass bottles
only) and drink it all day long. I love it and, until I
read your post, I felt very self-righteous about drinking
it. Anybody have flat water favorites?

I'm in the same boat. Every year starting with Halloween candy I put on a few extra pounds. Now I just have to book a trip to somewhere tropical for an incentive to lose! Jennifer:)

It's hard enough to have to try to drink 8 glasses of water a day, now I realize that 8 glasses is only the minimum of what you should drink if you want to lose weight!
Happy New Year Tish. May you and your family have a wonderful 2012.

Dearest Tish,

NOT using the salt shaker will have a great impact. Most Americans use it before even tasting their food! A national habit I guess... About the bubbly, any carbonated drink for that matter, that is true. It will make you bloated and drinking flat water is a lot healthier. Costco is my favorite flat water source.
Using some diuretic veggies such as celery, Chinese celery leafs, parsley, asparagus and pineapple, strawberries as a diuretic fruit will help a LOT.
Go for it; not a real big deal!
Love to you and best of luck for the entire year.

Tish's Dr Dukan advice was about the success of the Régime Dukan in France. Now I know why the diet has been a success: it works.

I don't drink fizzy drinks because I don't like to burp. It's the truth!

I just drink filtered tap water all day long.

What I find bloats me worse than sodium is WHEAT. And it makes me sleepy. So that's what I avoid the most.
