| Mary Queen of Scots (That collar would be an economical means to avoid a neck lift. Some designer should think of that.) |
In golf, the term "caddie" came from a mispronunciation. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, the French realized she loved the game of golf. To honor her visit the king had the first golf course built outside of Scotland so she could continue to enjoy her favorite pass time.
To make certain she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, cadets from a nearby military school were employed to accompany her. Mary liked the idea so much that when she returned home she took the practice with her.
In French cadet is pronounced "ca-day" and the Scots changed it to "caddie."
Et voila. I'm off.

Poor Mary--that collar didn't help her keep her head in the end!

Fascinating tidbit! I know some golfers who might get a kick out of that.
That is an interesting bit of trivia...
I would have never known Mary Queen of Scots played golf if you hadn't posted this fact.
Have a great time in Paris.
My husband (a golfer) LOVED this story and will no doubt be passing around this interesting bit of trivia on the golf course. Thanks and wish I was off to Paris today too. Had a dream I was there last night.
Hate golf, love history, love British history the most, and I love the French woman's style. This WILL be a conversation starter -- several of my friends DO play golf. Merci beaucoups, et bon voyage!
