Next Week or La Semaine Prochaine
A quick rundown for the week and then I'm off to Paris to have lunch and gossip, gossip, gossip with one of my best friends in the whole-wide-world. So exciting.
As I mentioned a while back, she and I will be spending our golden years together in a duplex in an area yet to be determined. As she pointed out, a friendly neighborhood saloon and hair salon that are walker walking distance from our abode will sway our decision. I am concerned about our walkers slipping on ice so I would like to negotiate climate with her as well.
Coming up in the days ahead:
Lots of News & Views
Back on the streets of Paris
Country on the street pictures
Non-stop surprises
And -- ta-daa -- today's "value-added" tip-of-the-week: On Friday I learned how to prune roses. Of course I thought I've always known how to prune roses, but like so much in my life I realize it's never too late to learn.
This is what I was told by a brilliant gardener and then seconded by another: When "dead heading" roses throughout the season, go down the stem counting the clusters of leaves. Normally they are in threes (who knew?) when you reach a group of four leaves, snip just above them. Supposedly the technique guarantees lush flowers for months.
Maybe you were deja au courant. You know my gardening skills are nil.
A demain, I'm out the door. . .

OH! I need to write that rose-pruning tip down RIGHT NOW!
And about the duplex, any chance of making that a tri? Climate definitely plays into the choice for me....and a good library nearby would also be a necessity...
So if I grow some roses, you might stop by with your shears to prune them?
(I'd offer you espresso and cookies... Or if you prefer, tea and a little pastry. I might even pull out the good china... )
:)

Invaluable tip Tish!! Enjoy your time together!!

Just now, after reading your tip, I went outside to learn your pruning method. Five minutes later, I'm back. My little rose bush jumped to five leaves, so I pruned just above that. As a reward, I have a violet tea rose on my desk that smells heavenly. Merci...
Oh Tish, indeed never too late to learn!! I love the pruning tip!
I have a New Giveaway from Serena and Lily you will love!

I have been pruning to 5 leaves when dead heading...
it works really well on repeat blooming roses...
you'll enjoy a flush of blooms all summer long!
Lunch in Paris with your friend sounds exciting.
There's nothing nicer than having a true friend to share ones life and dreams with...
i saw a lot of your past entries...what an interesting and provocative site. can you give an opinion on an issue related to fashion? i note that in paris women show lovely bare legs. i like my legs, but as i've gotten old, they've become pretty messed up with large brown blotches, all sorts of discoloration and splotchiness. would you just ignore all this and go bare, yourself? thanks! judy
I was so excited about your rose pruning tip because my five rose bushes are the closest I have to a garden. But after staring at them for a bit, realized they all seem to have five leaflets. Hmmm, no matter, I still love your value-added tip.
But did you know what's commonly called thorns on a rose stem are technically prickles (who knew)?
As others have noted, you prune above the 5 leaflet, but another tip is to cut to the leaflet that is growing outward from the bush. The bush will have a nicer shape and the interior will be open which is healthier.
I'm interested in what you figure out for retirement...my plan has to include a dining room with food prepared by someone else!
