It was no easy task "shopping" for my one, can't live without, investment coat for the season. I hit all the designers and I can affirm without equivocation, black is THE coat color of the season with the occasional mini-minor trends of camel and grey, which we've discussed several times. On occasion a single red will pop out of a collection and a few in deep navy blue.
Once again the rules of my self-imposed game: This week I shall shop 'til I drop in a fantasy world of my own creation. Each day I will select by category, i.e. coats, suits, dresses, LBDs, evening gowns, accessories, etc. My one constraint, despite the fact I could in this situation "buy" anything my little heart desires, I am supposed to think minimal. Whatever I choose must last a lifetime and must be a workhorse, which is to say I would want to wear it all the time. I am not allowed to buy everything.
As is my wont, I will show you several coats I think fit the bill and then tell you the three or four which I will be obliged to whittle down to one (or two. . .). I do take into account what I already own like black coats, a red pea coat, a grey cashmere reefer, a navy redingote and so on.
And finally, I chose no capes. I hate capes. I cannot deal with them. Where do you put your hands, how can you drive, they're simply too complicated for me. My two favorite shapes are reefers and redingotes. I am not a huge fan of the classic trench, which is supposed to be, I know, THE coat for every woman who wants a perfect wardrobe. I have a gorgeous long, full, flowing black one in silk that is sort of like the classic cowboy/cowgirl cut, with the belt tied in the back, never at the waist.
Remember, I'm shopping for me. If I were shopping for you, you would tell me what you like and then I would attack the challenge differently. Also, don't forget, I'm in my element when the colors are neutral. I'm not an enormous fan of color, as you know.
And the winners are. . .
Pictured above: At the top, top are my favorites, from which I must choose. The electric blue jacket, which I'm definitely taking is by Matthew Williamson (I'm allowing myself one jacket and one coat) because it is special and unique. My coat choice is the collar-less Yamamoto in navy, it has infinite possibilities and yes, I would snip off the threads hanging at the bottom -- not me at all.
I already basically own the grey Chloe coat, but if I didn't I would choose it, and I have an enormous crush on the black Watanabe taffeta coat -- or whatever the material is.
The others: Givenchy, Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Marni, Loewe, Sportmax, Oscar de la Renta (I really like this red jacket and almost chose it), Celine, and a Burberry pea coat (maybe with a tad too much hardware with those buttons).
