Virtual Holiday Shopping: Her Way, My Way

As everyone knows, and in case we forget, every year magazines devote forests of Christmas trees on articles discussing pre-holiday-stress-syndrome. Then the Internet and television picks up where they leave off, but at least they're not killing trees to write the same stories they offered last year.

The reason I mention this so early on is because Edith provoked a great deal of unneeded anxiety when we set out on our current weekly virtual shopping expedition at her kitchen table.

Let's be frank, she's stepped over the pre-agreed upon boundaries I set when we started our collaboration. Of course I have to humor her because I can't draw. I could see by the fire in her eyes it was time for compromise.

Normally -- my rules, my game -- I choose the clothes we are to virtually buy, then we take them home and mix them with what we already own. Fine, so far, so good. This week however as I was perusing what shade of black I might choose to kick-off our holiday shopping, Edith said:  "What about that lovely tobacco colored, one-shoulder blouse from Chloé? You can always wear it with black you know."

Here is something else I know, and I've certainly explained it a million times to Edith: I do not do bare arms -- not even one -- because they both match and I ALWAYS keep them undercover.

Now for the compromise. Feeling as I do the holidays should be filled with an unbridled spirit of kindness and generosity, I said just take the xxxx blouse, I'll choose something different.

Long story short: Edith grabbed her blouse and I chose the beautiful white one (Chloé) with the open-work sleeves. Her one-shouldered-blouse is worn with a long, straight silk faille skirt. My fully-sleeved blouse is worn with my trusty black satin evening trousers which you've seen many times in other outfits.

Now everyone is happy which is the perfect note to begin our next weeks of dressing for the fetes and celebrations on our calendars.

Next time we go directly to our closets and choose ensembles from within. No shopping, only clever coordination of what we've owned for years. Let's hope it works. Don't worry, we'll be shopping the remainder of the pre-game time to give us all some fresh ideas to brighten our spirits.

I don't care for anything one-shouldered (a.k.a. a "Wilma") in general, and I don't care for the alternating gatherings and openings on that Wilma in particular.

How's that for being cranky first thing in the morning?

Your top is much better, Tish, and it's something a girl could wear forever.

Your little disagreement made for a good twist on the game.

I think very few women could wear the one-shoulder tobacco blouse, and I don't love one shoulder in general, unless it's ultra simple-sleek and on a tall woman. (That lets me out.)

Much prefer the white blouse. Et moi aussi... les bras couverts; je suis, après tout, une femme d'un certain âge...

I'm with you...no skin above the elbow sees the light of day (or night) unless the temperature stays over 90F for more than a few hours, or there's a large body of water less than 3 feet away.

Both choices are lovely, but I do think the white blouse would be wearable for decades, long after the one-shoulder trend has faded.

I'm with you on the bare arms -- which was why I was so pleased to find asymmetry that covered my arms in my black velvet "opera dress" -- Still, I'm glad you compromised because I love the idea and the look of that Chloë blouse (on someone else, someone young, someone with beautiful upper arms).

I agree that the white will last longer but the tabacco one is a beautiful colour.I just think that Edith needs a little support too !! I like both looks and would wear any of them XXXX

The white blouse is more classic but the one-shoulder number is more fun. The only problem, like you I do not wish to bare upper arms - ever. What a fun game you and your friend have going on.

Like the touches of red to the white blouse, but find the tobacco item an interesting color. I would want the white blouse in the tobacco color as I'm afraid I must join the army of "no bare arms" -- even though the style of Edith's choice looks intriguing.

Both of these tops look so much better with the bottoms that you both chose. I can't get past the "harem" pants trend. I think of MC Hammer every time I see them.

Yes, so with you re: the bare arms theory - wish I could but alas "no go area".... (and why oh why are there so many cute LBD's SANS sleeves?) Think your white blouse looks great and love the red earrings /flower brooch too as a nod to the forthcoming festive season!
