Playing In Our Placards

Edith and I didn't go virtual this week. In fact, we did virtually nothing beyond throwing open our closet doors in search of treasures within.

In a mad frenzy we flung our frocks about until we came up with ensembles we already own that will take us -- with our signature elegance and style (ahem) -- wherever, whenever this holiday season.

We're on an economy kick, although we weren't exactly busting our budgets with our weekly virtual shopping expeditions (please see prior posts on Thursdays). Nevertheless I thought we should see what we could do with what we have.

We plan on continuing the theme next week, but will buy -- literally or virtually -- an accessory or two to add an au courant edge to our ensembles.

This is what we pulled out of our placards for all those parties to which we have yet to be invited. Note to potential hosts and hostesses: It's getting late and we're ready to party (!)

We can be dressed and out the door, makeup and hair included, in less than 30 minutes. Is anybody listening?

From the top:

1.) Edith in a little black dress she has "had forever." She added a long, soft, wide lurex ribbon -- turned twice around her waist, bowed and fastened with a brooch.

2.) Moi in navy crepe pants and matching satin tunic. The satin makes it seem darker, with  a large brooch of grapes from the 50s which belonged to my mother and my red grosgrain Louis heels.

3.) Edith in a short-sleeve Calvin Klein sweater (which you have seen before and she cannot describe the material, "it's stretchy," she says) and a 20-year-old Yves Saint Laurent lurex skirt. She's wearing her favorite boots -- again -- because she thinks it makes her look young and trendy. . . OK, they probably do.

4.) Moi encore, this time in a plum satin square neck shell and matching trousers from my favorite Chinese boutique (again) with an ancient navy crepe jacket made for me by my brilliant couturière (seamstress, but couturière sounds more glam); an ancient cummerbund from Monsoon and the same red shoes with which you can see Edith took a little artistic license with the straps.

Bravo! I like that you shopped your own closets and the results are fantastic. The first dress with the ribbon is brilliant, the tunic - also brilliant! And did I hear that right...a 20 year old YSL skirt? Quality really does last!

Love it! Thanks for sending this out--please tell Edith that she just gave me an idea of what to wear to a Christmas party this Friday evening (referencing the first picture).

Tish, You are style and elegance personified. That is why I enjoy your blog. If you want to jet to middle America my wife is having her annual open house on Christmas Eve!

I want to know about your bracelets as well, Tish. And I love the idea of owning a designer piece for so long and still finding it wearable.

Merveilleux! Shopping my own closet is something I'm doing this year. I love the dress with the ribbon around the waist.

I'm having a dinner party on Friday - you're invited if you're in the area. (west coast of Canada)

This is perfect - shopping your own closet, and the outfits you came up with are elegant and timeless. The antique brooch was a fabulous touch!
I sent you an email, looking forward to hearing from you.

I love them all. If you show me black I'm there !!.....and a bit of shopping out of your own closet certainly saves on the purse strings ! XXXX

Loved these, but especially your selections, Tish. They were slimming and au courant. Add me to the list of inquiring minds on your bracelets -- just the idea of bracelets on both wrists is intriguing. Edith's boots stole the show for me. Thanks for making me look in my closet too for fresh ideas.
XO from snowland -- when did I move to the arctic?

being on an economy kick is a wonderful thing. a little extra accessory on the top or shoe & no one notices the ensemble as much anyway. yay! :)

Wonderful post. I loved everything.

I was wondering if I would hire your sketch artist...I want to be tall, thin, and elegant.

How very elegant your results are! I'm afraid if I shop in my closet the end result would not be nearly so glam! very inspiring, and please do drop by during hte holidays for a bit of spirit and fun! you're invited!

Thank you Stephanie, D.P. (Oh, yes, D.P., Cherie will address the bracelets).

Aanonce, I hate to give Edith too many compliments. She'll make me fatter and herself thinner.

Merci, Jeanne-Aelia.

Oh, James, I'm blushing. At least I know someone has invited me to a party. I feel better already.

Lorrie, Now I have two invitations. Wish I would be your house looks so pretty, warm and welcoming AND I love Canada, spent a lot of my life on "the other side" of the Niagara Falls border.

I know, Jackie, I've been -- and also pushed by Edith and after all she does the drawings -- to move off the black. Now when people see me in navy they think it's black. I have to explain what a giant leap it is for mean. Honestly. . .

Thank you dear Carole -- that famous long, straight line. One does the best one can.

I know, Rita, too funny. One week back Edith made herself super thin and piled the pounds on me. I had to have a little chat with her. . .
